Extending contestation: opposition party strength and dissenting civil society engagement with autocratic elections

How does the strength of political-party opposition affect government-critical civil society organisations (CSOs)’ engagement with autocratic elections? The question is particularly pertinent in current context deepening autocratization and repression civic dissent. In this article, I explore argument that strong parties or coalitions facilitate CSOs’ acts dissent by offering robust dual electoral contestation: they credibly compete for power forcefully politicise regulation. Strong thereby change incentives make activism more possible meaningful. article investigates through a qualitative comparison two cases autocratisation: Kenya opposition, Uganda weak one. analysis largely supports argument. However, also demonstrates even autocratisation makes CSO dangerous activity requires careful balancing between rewards risks.
